Tsing-Ma Bridge 1997
The Bridge
The Tsing Ma Bridge, opened in 1997, is part of the Lantau Link to connect the main island of Hong Kong to the international airport of Chek Lap Kok.
It is the world’s longest suspension-bridge span for combined road/railway traffic at 1,377m. The steel deck is 79m above mean high water, to allow navigational clearance to Hong Kong harbour, and 41m wide to carry six lanes of traffic (upper level) and two railway tracks (lower). Its concrete towers are 206m high, with four crossbeams, and support two 1.1m-diameter main cables.
It takes its name from the two small islands at each end, Tsing Yi and Ma Wan.
