B2
B2 presents Dr William (Bill) Brown’s achievements in long-span suspension bridge design.
It is a celebration of the life and work of the bridge pioneer and consulting engineer, who created designs and supervised construction of the revolutionary Severn Bridge and the two Bosphorus Bridges in Istanbul, He was also lead designer of the proposed 3300m Messina Crossing, and the concept design of the twin-deck Çanakkale Bridge across the Dardanelles.
We feature 50 long-span suspension bridges including 14 that involved the work of Dr William Brown.
A Remarkable Career
Dr Brown was Principal Designer at Freeman Fox & Partners from the 1960s onwards and partner responsible for creating design and directing construction from 1970-85. He was Partner-in-charge in Istanbul on the Bosphorus Bridge construction during 1972 and 1973.
The Turkish Government appointed him as the Engineer and Project Director for construction of the Second Bosphorus Bridge and National Motorway. In 1987 he founded Brown Beech & Associates, consulting engineers and bridge designers, and became lead designer for the proposed 3300m span bridge across Stretto di Messina, Italy and the proposed Çanakkale Bridge, across the Dardanelles.
Book
Bill Brown's Bridges
The official biography of Dr William Brown was launched in December 2015 at the Institution of Civil Engineers, London, in front of friends, family and key figures from the international engineering industry.
The 148-page hardback biography was researched, written, designed and published by 301 Design. It features more than 100 stunning photographs and illustrations of bridges including the Severn Bridge, two bridges over the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul and the proposed 3,300m crossing of the Messina Strait in Italy.
"Originality was his constant theme, as witness his development with Gilbert Roberts of the revolutionary Severn Bridge, and his daring design for the great Messina Strait Bridge."
Peter Buckland
"Bill Brown played a vital role in the design of the great series of suspension bridges over the Forth, the Severn, the Humber and the Bosphorus which were longer and more elegant than anything built before."
The Times
"It is not given to many men that what they can leave behind such a wondrous visual and practical legacy for generations to enjoy and Bill Brown did it with such creative confidence and professional skill."
Geoffrey Harcourt
"His expertise extended to cranes, radio telescopes and other special structures as well as bridges. He devised the concept of single box section jibs and crane girders, which was subsequently adopted universally."
